On the 17th January 2007, there will be a traditional wassailing folk music playing session at Butchers Arms, Carhampton, West Somerset with cider soaked toast (but that’s for the apple trees), shooting (that’s at the apple trees) and Wassailing singing.

The elderly at rest homes or nursing homes are always so appreciative of even modest musician efforts so when I got an invitation from a musician friend, whose mother had just moved into the Dunster Lodge Residential Home, Minehead, Exmoor, to welcome in the new year one afternoon with some folk music tunes, I readily agreed.

It’s fantastic the varied people you meet at pub music sessions and the different walks of life and interests they come from.
On New Year’s Eve, I visited the Pennymoor Singaround in the West Country of England to play some traditional English and Irish folk music and it was nice to see old friends but I also discovered a local Bluegrass Music session and a fascinating local Somerset and Devon craftsman who specialises in making Sugan traditional Celtic furniture.

I knew that Christmas had really got under way when I attended to play some traditional folk and Christmas tunes at the local day care centre.

Desperate to play some traditional folk music, yesterday (Sunday), I drove down to The Dolphin in the Barbican at Plymouth, in the West of England.
It was really cool. For 1st Sunday of the month afternoon pub entertainment in a down to earth traditional water front pub, it’s a place I will certainly go back to.

Always looking for something different, I visited a popular live music club in Bideford for it’s Tuesday evening jamming session.
My musical experience is mainly in the acoustic tradition but I can see that the vibrant sound of electric guitars can be very appealing.

It’s amazing how important music is in our day to day lives. We listen to it. We hum it. Some of us are crazy enough to sit in bars and perform it. Whatever way we are involved in music, we seem to respond to it at a very fundamental level.
I’m sure music will continue to be an important part in my free online fiction and the whole crazy universe of musical creativity is part of what I hope to document here.
